Neanderthal DNA Linked to Depression, Strokes and Smoking http://bit.ly/1TiKOeA m
Surprisingly, the research shows that anything from risk of depression to risk of nicotine addiction can be associated with strands of Neanderthal DNA present in modern humans.
Modern humans of Eurasian origin share anything from 1% to 4% of their DNA with Neanderthals.
The connections between modern humans and Neanderthals are a seemingly permanent source of fascination, a subject which has inspired an endless amount of studies and research. We are desperate to learn anything about the relationships we had with our closest extinct genetic cousins thousands of years ago and the influence they may still have on us now.
Published in the journal Science, the new study from scientists at Vanderbilt University is the first to actually compare Neanderthal DNA in a significant population of adults from European ancestry with their medical records.
