A Magnet For Mosquitoes? Blame Your Genes

“Mosquitoes ‘lured by body odor genes’,” BBC News reports. Researchers tested a series of non-identical and identical twins, and found identical twins had similar levels of attractiveness to mosquitoes.

Researchers have long known that some people are more attractive to mosquitoes than others, and some think this is to do with body odor.

Body odor is, in part, inherited through our genes, so the researchers running this study wanted to find out whether twins with identical genes shared a similar level of attractiveness to mosquitoes.

They exposed the hands of sets of identical and non-identical twins to mosquitoes to see which twin the mosquitoes preferred.

The results showed identical twins were likely to have about the same level of attractiveness to mosquitoes, while non-identical twins’ results differed more. This strongly suggests there is a genetic component, in the same way there is for height and IQ.

Medications In The Water Found To Change Sex Of Fish

There has been a spate of mainstream media (MSM) articles recently revealing the linkage between drugs in the water supplies and altered reproductive organs of fish. Some of these exposés have drawn a correlation between the explosion of fish abnormalities (and mutations) and different types of prescription and over-the-counter drugs found in their aquatic environments.

That the water supplies the world over, especially where medication drugs are both plentiful and affordable, have now reached such dangerous concentrations is rarely addressed by public health authorities.

As reported by UPI:

“As the rate of diabetes skyrockets in the United States, so too are prescriptions for the drugs that treat the blood sugar disorder. One of the most common Type II diabetes medication is metformin.

But metformin isn’t just being found on pharmacy shelves and private medicine cabinets. It’s also increasingly showing up in freshwater systems. Now, new research suggests it could be to blame for intersex fish.”

This Vitamin Is Vital For Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease

Around 90% of people aren’t getting enough of an important nutrient that could prevent Alzheimer’s and other degenerative neurological diseases. It is an easy vitamin to get if you are eating the right foods, and of course you can supplement, but many people don’t realize how simple and effective it can be for treating brain disease.

Without this vitamin, the brain is deprived of one of its primary sources of neuronal health. People without enough of it also end up having lower levels of DHA-PC, an important part of every cell that helps to make up the cell membrane.

As explained by Nature:

“Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, synaptic disruption, and neuronal loss. Several studies have demonstrated decreases of docosahexaenoic acid-containing phosphatidylcholines (DHA-PCs) in the AD brain.”

US Govt Lowers Fluoride Levels In Drinking Water For First Time In 50 Years

The United States government has finally lowered fluoride levels in drinking water for the first time in 50 years following research by Harvard and other institutions that high exposure to fluoride can lower your IQ and wreak havoc on your body.

It was around 3 years ago, after all, that the government actually backed the historic study by Harvard scientists on the subject of fluoride’s devastating effects on cognitive ability. As I detailed in July of 2012, authors published their conclusion online in the July 20th edition of the prominent journal Environmental Health Perspectives: a federal government medical journal stemming from the United States National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

In the research by Harvard, it is made even more explicitly clear just how toxic fluoride can be to the body. In a written statement, researchers state:

Navy Makes Transparent, Bulletproof Material Out Of Clay

The R&D folks at the US Naval Research Laboratory have once again done their best MacGyver impression, creating something impossibly cool and useful (a new type of bulletproof glass) from seemingly mundane source materials (synthetic powdered clay).

While it might not be exactly akin to taking a wad of chewed-up bubblegum and a paper clip and fashioning it into a bazooka, the NRL took the clay material, heated and pressed it under vacuum (a process also known as sintering) and turned it into durable, transparent sheets.

This material is known as Spinel, and according to lead investigator Dr. Jas Sanghera, it actually is “a mineral, it’s magnesium aluminate.” More importantly, he added, Spinel is “much tougher, stronger, harder than glass” and “can withstand sand and rain erosion.”

Experts Ask World To Help Ban Monsanto’s Cancer-Linked Glyphosate

In an open letter to China, ten European non-profit groups have asked the Chinese people to take action to help clean up the world food supply which has been contaminated with Round Up and glyphosate chemicals.

The action was inspired by the recent World Health Organization Cancer Panel that declared glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen” for humans. The letter was written to the Chinese Embassy, and addressed to the Chinese people because the country is the world’s largest producer of glyphosate (even though it is largely sprayed on crops in the US and elsewhere.) China is also the world’s largest importer of Round-up Ready GMO soy.

GM soy has been found to contaminate the entire food chain with traces of glyphosate, from the plant, to the animal who feeds on it, all the way to human embryos. Glyphosate traces have even been found in our blood, urine, and mother’s breast milk.

What Does It Mean To Your Health If You Crave Cinnamon?

Cinnamon is a powerful medicinal herb that possesses both anti-microbial and antifungal properties. Rich in antioxidants, it has been used for centuries in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda; and. ancient medical practitioners were well aware of the numerous medicinal qualities of this exotic spice. Cinnamon is an effective weapon against diabetes and assists the body in controlling insulin and blood sugar levels. If you find yourself craving cinnamon, it may be a signal that your pancreas needs a little extra help and that your blood sugar levels are outside of the normal range.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is the body’s inability to produce insulin and control blood sugar levels. Adult onset diabetes, or Diabetes mellitus Type II, is the most common form whose symptoms include increased hunger and thirst, frequent urination especially during the night, tiredness and unexplained weight loss. Many people are able to control the symptoms of Type II Diabetes with a healthy diet and lifestyle, and cinnamon is a natural way to assist in managing the disease.

Is The FDA Set To Ban Homeopathy?

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) could soon start regulating and possibly banning popular natural homeopathic remedies.

The agency is considering changes that would place the same restrictions and regulations on homeopathic substances that are placed on other drugs.

“At this stage we are gathering information about whether to adjust our current enforcement policy,” Cynthia Schnedar, the director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, told The Washington Post.

The FDA held hearings on the matter this week and is taking public comments, too.

Schnedar did not reveal what changes her agency is considering. Currently the FDA merely sends manufacturers of homeopathic products warning letters if its staff thinks they are dangerous or go too far in their claims. It has sent nearly 40 letters since 1989.

Here’s How To Download And Delete What Google Search Knows About You

Have you ever wondered what Google Search really knows about you? Well, now you can check, as Google has added a new feature that lets you view and download your entire search history.

Yep. Everything.

The feature, which was spotted by the unofficial Google Operating System Blog — though VentureBeat points out that the function was made available in January — gives you access to everything from what you searched for to the links you clicked on from those searches. It also shows you the addresses you’ve searched for.

I was even able to see the list of images I clicked on while searching for pictures of cats eating spaghetti. Now imagine what you’ve looked for. Oh, and clearing your browser history won’t delete this data.

After Cancer Link Confirmed, EPA Still Doubles Herbicide Use

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently approved a doubling in the use of Dow Chemical’s controversial new herbicide Enlist Duo.

A mix of glyphosate and 2,4 D, Enlist Duo received the green light for use in nine more key farming states. After major backlash and lawsuits, the new herbicide was limited to only six states during its initial approval in 2014.

The EPA has given the go-ahead to spray the new herbicide on genetically engineered corn and soybeans in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Oklahoma. It was previously approved for use in only Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

With the world still in shock from glyphosate’s new designation as a “possible human carcinogen,” the EPA appears to be ignoring any new findings by doubling down on their extended approval. What is also interesting it that the EPA never updated its Enlist Duo Herbicide Fact Sheet from 2014, which states:

US judge to rule whether chimps have human rights or not

Chimps are people, too!

…or are they? That’s what a New York judge will decide after granting lawyers representing two chimpanzees from Stony Brook University to present arguments as to why their clients should be freed from captivity at the institution.

A group of chimps at Gombe Stream National Park
by Ikiwaner

The complaint was initially filed by The Nonhuman Rights Project, and according to Time.com, officials at Stony Brook will now have to demonstrate that they have a reason to detain the duo during a hearing before New York County Supreme Court Judge Barbara Jaffe on May 27.

Chimps (briefly) granted writ of habeas corpus

Earlier this week, Judge Jaffe issued an order to show cause and writ of habeas corpus on behalf of the two chimps, Hercules and Leo, which are being used in biomedical experimentation at the Long Island-based university. It marked the first time non-human animals had been granted such a writ, and The Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) hailed it as a triumph.

Police Seize $63,530 From Veteran Because He Kept It In Grocery Bags

Simply carrying a large amount of cash in a grocery sack in your car is now sufficient grounds for a police officer to seize your money, a US circuit court has ruled. A panel of the Eighth US Circuit Court of Appeals found that all a deputy has to do to seize cash from a person is say it is drug money.

The court refused to return the $63,530 that Deputy Dave Wintle seized from a disabled veteran named Mark A. Brewer during a traffic stop in 2011. Brewer was never charged with a crime or even given a traffic ticket. Yet the decorated Air Force veteran lost his savings when a drug-sniffing dog smelled marijuana on it, even though no cannabis was found in Brewer’s car or his home.

Brewer saved the money from disability payments and his Air Force pay — as documents deputies found in the car indicated. He said he was traveling to Los Angeles to visit his uncle and to use the money as a down payment for a house. He added he was hoping his uncle could help him get a job there.

After a disaster when power is out, the two most important things people yearn for are heat and food. A rocket stove is a useful survival tool because it produces a very hot flame and needs very little fuel.

These stoves are highly efficient? Woodstoves, which can also burn coal or other biofuels. They are simple to construct, making sustainable cooking stations that can also be used as heating units at campsites and in your own backyard. Rocket stoves are inexpensive to build, and can be quickly erected from bricks, blocks or stones around your yard. Because they use such a small amount of fuel, they’re down right cheap to maintain and can be augmented with solar panels and other modifications to provide a wide range of heating and cooking facilities. If building one for use indoors, remember it needs to be vented.

Tiny Sensor Detects Spoiled Meat: Use In “Smart Packaging” Could Improve Food Safety

MIT chemists have devised an inexpensive, portable sensor that can detect gases emitted by rotting meat, allowing consumers to determine whether the meat in their grocery store or refrigerator is safe to eat.

The sensor, which consists of chemically modified carbon nanotubes, could be deployed in “smart packaging” that would offer much more accurate safety information than the expiration date on the package, says Timothy Swager, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Chemistry at MIT.

This MIT device, based on modified carbon nanotubes, can detect amines produced by decaying meat.

Bryn Celli Ddu: Ancient Stone Circle And Passage Tomb Was For The Living And The Dead

Stonehenge is arguably one of the most iconic prehistoric monuments in the UK. Nevertheless, this ancient structure is just one of many henges found across the country. The fame gained by Stonehenge has eclipsed many of the other stone circles found in the UK, sites largely unknown to most people. Nevertheless, these lesser known structures are interesting and impressive in their own right, and deserve attention. Bryn Celli Ddu, on the island of Anglesy in Wales, is one such ancient monument that was not only a stone circle, but also functioned as a ‘passage tomb’. It was a place to pay respects to, and protect the remains of ancestors.

Smart Meter Opt-Out Fees Rescinded In Arizona, Commissioners Fearing Liability

At a meeting last Monday, and after spending an hour in “executive session” privately discussing the issue with their lawyers, the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) rescinded the decision they made last December to allow APS to charge an extortion fee to people who refuse a “smart” meter.

Last December the ACC had approved a $50 up-front fee for those not “grandfathered in” with an existing analog meter, and $5 per month to avoid the harm inherent in “smart” meters. That misguided, illegal and ill-considered ACC decision was appealed both by Pat Ferre of Payson, Arizona and I in separate appeals.

22 Things To Start Doing Now That Will Improve The Rest Of Your Life

1. Exercise. And if you can, exercise in the morning. This helps in so many ways. It will help you sleep better at night and be more alert during the day. It will help wake you up in the morning by getting your blood flowing. It will help to sharpen and focus your mind. It will help relieve stress. There are just so many benefits.

2. Don’t say “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I don’t have time.” Tomorrow tends to be the imaginary land that never arrives, and 95-99% of the time when people say “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I don’t have time” it really means “I’d rather just be lazy.”

3. Don’t make excuses. Just do it. If there is something that you want to do, whether it is just something that you think would be fun, a new experience, or something to better yourself then do it. This sort of goes with point #2. If you’re making excuses then all that means is your really don’t want it that badly.

Alkaline-Forming Foods Prevent Acid Reflux, Heartburn, GERD And Barrett’s Esophagus

Acid reflux is the condition where food and stomach acids regurgitate back into the esophagus, causing burning pain in the lower chest accompanied by a host of other symptoms such as bloating, belching, sore throats, snoring, difficulty breathing and ulcers.

The early stages of digestion occur with the release of hydrochloric acid in the stomach to break down foods. Later during the digestive process, bicarbonate is released by the pancreas to help neutralize those acids. In some instances, this process doesn’t happen, contributing to painful reflux or GERD symptoms. Eating certain alkaline-forming foods can help reduce over-acidity and calm the stomach, relieving pain and other unwanted symptoms. In addition, foods that contribute to an alkaline-forming state in the system help prevent acidosis, a serious bodily condition that sets the stage for all disease.

A Guide To California’s Water Crisis – And Why It’s So Hard To Fix

California saw this drought coming. Even if people in the state didn't know it would be this bad — now the worst in recorded history — they've known that dry years are inevitable and had all sorts of ideas for how to deal with them.

But for all that planning, California's current drought has been a total disaster. Reservoirs are drying up. Crops are wilting in the fields. For the first time ever, towns and cities will face a mandatory 25 percent cut in their water use.

The problem isn't that no one foresaw the drought. The problem is that no one has been able to solve an underlying issue that is simultaneously less scary and also much harder than a dry spell: California's convoluted water system and intractable water politics.

The Underground Get Stronger When A Missile Or Meteor Hits

"When a missile or meteor strikes the earth, the havoc above ground is obvious, but the details of what happens below ground are harder to see.

Duke University physicists have developed techniques that enable them to simulate high-speed impacts in artificial soil and sand in the lab, and then watch what happens underground close-up, in super slow motion.

These are frames from a high-speed video of a metal object slamming into a bed of artificial soil, sand or rock. Shown at slow (top), medium (middle) and high impact speeds (bottom), the changing impact forces illuminated in each frame help explain why soil and sand get stronger when they are struck harder."

A new study provides an inside look at the most powerful explosions in the universe: gamma-ray bursts.

These rare explosions happen when extremely massive stars go supernova. The stars’ strong magnetic fields channel most of the explosion’s energy into two powerful plasma jets, one at each magnetic pole. The jets spray energetic particles for light-years in both directions, at close to light speed.

Update: Man Who Punched Toddler In The Face In Viral Video Has Been Arrested

As previously reported at The Daily Sheeple, video has now gone viral of a man punching a toddler in the face in a Bakersfield convenience store.

In the video, the toddler, probably aged around 3 or 4 years old, is seen running through a grocery store as his father comes running after him.

When the child realizes his dad is chasing him he slows down and puts his hands up as if he knows a violent outburst is coming. A split second later the man takes a swing at the child, hits him in the face, and knocks him to the floor.

The mother then takes the child by the hand, though she seems to ignore the fact that an adult male just smashed her child in the face, and she nonchalantly walks out of the store.

When the child realizes his dad is chasing him he slows down and puts his hands up as if he knows a violent outburst is coming. A split second later the man takes a swing at the child, hits him in the face, and knocks him to the floor.

Police And Prosecutors Say This Man Is Innocent But He Still Faces Life In Prison

A Virginia man is facing the possibility of indefinite incarceration for a crime that both police and prosecutors believe he did not commit. To make matters worse, state law bars the man, Michael Kenneth McAlister, from presenting evidence of his possible innocence to a judge who could decide his fate.

“In short, Mr. McAlister finds himself facing the Kafka-esque prospect of indefinite incarceration beyond his mandatory release date — all predicated on a crime that not a single person in law enforcement with knowledge of the case believes he committed,” McAlister’s attorneys wrote in an appeal to Virginia Governor Terry .

How To Detox From Fluoride

In today’s world, fluoride is hard to avoid completely. Here’s how to detox your body.
Adding fluoride to the water supplies has been called murder on a grand scale. But whether or not your town adds it to your drinking water, you’re probably ingesting this toxin every day.
You’re exposed to fluoride if you take prescription drugs like Prozac, swim in pools, or sit in hot tubs.  It’s in conventional produce like lettuce, and commercial bread and bakery products.  It may be in beverages like iced tea, wine, and beer made with municipal water, or in infant formula.  And of course it’s in toothpaste.  It may even sneak into your food from Teflon coated pots and pans.

Fossil gives 'voice' to the terror bird

Sixty million years ago, a group of large predatory flightless “terror birds” stalked the South American continent in search of prey.

Brazil water crisis: 56 Northeastern cities are in state of collapse, says government | Environment:

According to the government, there are studies indicating that this drought can last for up to three to four years. The Environment Minister, Izabella Teixeira, claimed that her team is devising a plan to adapt to climate change.

Acidic oceans implicated in Earth's worst mass extinction – ‘These findings may help us understand the threat posed to marine life by modern-day ocean acidification’

It is one of science's enduring mysteries: what caused the worst mass extinction in Earth's history. And, no, it is not the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Scientists said on Thursday that huge amounts of carbon dioxide spewed from colossal volcanic eruptions in Siberia may have turned the world's oceans dangerously acidic 252 million years ago, helping to drive a global environmental calamity that killed most land and sea creatures.

Commercial fishermen and other mariners form the words 'Acid Ocean' during an event held to spread the message of saving the oceans from acidification caused by fossil fuel emissions, in Homer, Alaska, in this file photo taken on 6 September 2009. Photo: Lou Dematteis / Reuters

53 Inspiring Self-Esteem And Self-Love Quotes

Some things may be equally essential but nothing is more important than a healthy sense of self-esteem and loving yourself.

Why?

In my experience, three of the most important reasons are:

Life becomes simpler and lighter. When you love yourself more then things simply become lighter and easier. You won’t make as many mountains out of molehills (or out of plain air) as you used to. Or beat yourself up or drag yourself down over mistakes or temporary setbacks.

You’ll have more inner stability and self-sabotage less. When your opinion of yourself goes up then you’ll stop trying to get so much validation and attention from other people. You become less needy and find an inner stability even when your world might be negative or uncertain at times.

Five Sustainable Eco Building Techniques Provide Natural Holistic Living Environments

Natural building, or eco building, involves the construction of wood ovens, shelters, barns, and even entire houses using sustainable materials and traditional building methods. While it has seen a recent surge in popularity and is seen as a ‘novel’ building method by many, natural building actually dates back to prehistoric times, and incorporates the same materials used in the construction of the oldest shelters that are in existence today. Eco building focuses on creating beautiful, environmentally sustainable homes that are strong enough to stand the test of time, and are created using materials that are usually sourced from the very site that the structure will stand on. Earth, clay, sand, stone, and straw are used in different combinations to form sturdy, breathable structures that provide healthy living environments with minimal damage to the environment.
